National Poetry Month 2010, Day 1

National Poetry Writing Month

I’ll be doing National Poetry Writing Month again this year. I don’t expect anything except a lot of  rough drafts, most not worth revising — and some toning of my writing muscles.

The dragonfly spends
up to five years as a larva
under the pond’s surface
among mud and tadpoles.
The adult lives
about five months.
It can’t swim or
despite its six legs
walk, only settle
a moment
on your fishing line
before returning
to the air. Next year
I turn fifty. I
shuffle in my slippers
and can no longer
remember my dreams.
I’d better learn
to fly in the daylight.
